Klay Thompson kneed in head
Man, it's getting dangerous to play basketball these days.
I haven't seen something like that since Bruce Bowen karate kicked Wally Sczerbiak.
Stephen Curry took a nasty tumble as well.
Maybe that's why everybody in the NBA is wearing mouth guards these days.

All these time travel movies - how do you get back to the exact spot
I enjoy watching time travel movies, but one thing always bothered me. If you go back in time, wouldn't you go back in time in the exact point in space at where you're at in the future?
In the movies the time traveler always ends up at the spot on earth where they were.
But the earth has rotated many times in the meantime, the earth has rotated around the sun, the sun has moved millions of miles. How would you get back to the exact spot in space? Even the rotation of the earth varies day by day.
I guess I should just sit back, enjoy the show and stop thinking so much.

Seven Person Boat Crash
"The driver of the boat suffered moderate injuries and a blow to his wallet as well. He’s being cited for speeding and imprudent operation of the boat. Five of the seven people on board were hospitalized, four of them with moderate injuries including broken bones."
Let's be safe out there guys. If you listen to the audio, at the 6:05 mark it sounds like they say "get rid of these beers." Before the crash, it looks like nobody is having a good time.

Epson dot matrix font
I was looking through my Epson JX-80 manuals and they had really nice diagrams of the dot matrix font.
So I thought I'd reproduce the font, writing a QBasic editor to assist me. In copying the font I really appreciate all of the work and design that went into making characters that look good. You really notice these things when you are plotting every dot. Maybe I'll upload the program after I clean it up a little.
I like that authentic "dot matrix" look.

Gateway Anykey keyboard and KVM switch
I like to use more than one computer and switch between them with my KVM switch. It uses ScrollLock ScrollLock UpArrow to switch from one port to another. So I thought, it'd sure be nice to have a keyboard that was designed specifically to do the KVM switching. Then I remembered an old PS/2 Gateway Anykey Keyboard that I had which could be programmed with macros. After scanning the internet for instructions on how to program the Anykey. (Ctrl+program_macro, f9 scroll scroll up program_macro) I got the F9 key in the lower left programmed for Scroll,Scroll,Up and ba-da-bing-ba-da-boom it works!
I'm surprised someone hasn't dissected these Anykey keyboards and figured out how to program them with software on a computer. There were some DOS programs from Gateway that could download the anykey macros and restore them from a file.

Red Auerbach on how to gain a competitive edge
The Case for Cheating, from an NBA Great
"Auerbach turned to life lessons. "Everybody always asks me how to gain a competitive edge," he said, "and I'm always surprised because the answer is so obvious." One of the best comics of all time, IMO. Great art and story, what more could you ask for? Michael Golden did the pencils and colors, Armando Gil the inks. My philosophy on driving
My philosophy on driving is this: I don't like hard starts or hard stops. I feel that if you're starting hard or stopping hard, you're doing it wrong. Smooth is better.
One of the things I hate is to have to slam on my brakes. If I exceed the speed limit, when I hit a yellow light I have to hit the brakes really hard. So I prefer to go the speed limit. And my passengers appreciate it.
I have precious cargo in my car: my family. It's my responsibility as driver to get to our destination safely. I try to reduce risk by not taking unnecessary risks. I'd rather be patient than have an accident. Safety is the number one priority.
It's often little things that make the difference, like pausing for a second after the light turns green and looking left before you enter the intersection. I've nearly been wiped out by cross traffic coming through late. If I'd jumped out I would've been T-Boned. You never know when it's coming.
You really remove your margin for error when you drive aggressively. It's just not worth it.

Big O Notation, big numbers and the planet
The thing about exponential growth is that at some point, the numbers start growing very large. It starts off slowly, and then at a certain threshold, the graph starts going vertical.
It reminds me of big O notation in computer science. It doesn't really matter what the "constant" is, the important thing to pay attention to is how fast the required computation time grows. You've got an algorithm that grows at n squared time, it doesn't really matter what the constant multiplier is. The growth in n squared will reduce the constant multiplier to insignificance.
You look at the earth and it's really a finite resource. The earth is huge but finite. Exponential growth will always start running up against hard limits. We've got 7 billion people now and I wonder if the earth can support the people and the lifestyles and the attitudes we have now.
It doesn't really matter what the "constant" is with our exponential growth. It's not a question of if but when. And we're quibbling about when these things will happen.
We can see the signs everywhere. Look at the oceans. Fish stocks in the ocean are disappearing. Fleets of factory trawlers running 365/24/7. The prophetic movie Soylent Green revolved around the "secret" of the oceans dying. It's just a matter of time now before there is a massive collapse.
http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2009/06/12/the-end-of-the-line/
Does it really matter if the collapse happens in 2100 or 2050? It's just a few short decades away.

When Cars Attack
I remember this show that aired back in 1997 with Richard Belzer called "When Cars Attack." It was a mock documentary that investigated numerous instances of cars suddenly becoming aggressive and out of control.
Supposedly there was this illegitimate son of a well known car industralist and a mysterious component called the "hydrosolator."
The show was ridiculous, but still amusing and memorable. Richard Belzer did a great job of delivering it with a straight face. I probably remember it being better than it was.

Is makeup cheating?
Since we put so much of a premium on looks, is it surprising that cosmetics is a major industry? According to http://www.statista.com/topics/1008/cosmetics-industry/ the United States is the biggest cosmetic market in the world, with an estimated total revenue of about 54.89 billion U.S. dollars.

Bring back bench seats
One thing I like about my car is that it has bench seats in the front. With a center console, I feel claustrophobic. It's also nice to have some room to turn your body so you can see when you are backing up.
