I always thought the arcade game Berzerk was awesome. Here's an interview with its creator, Alan McNeil, who went on to greater things like creating Macromedia Director.
"I believe that my rule of thumb helped make Berzerk a good value coin-op game. The rule was take the current price of a movie theater ticket and divide it down to pennies per minute then figure out the time you should get for a quarter - it was between 3 and 5 minutes back then depending on where the theater was located. So my goal was a 3 minute game for a beginner. "
